One Water

01 · WUN ORIGIN

An Intimate Encounter With a Mother Grey Whale in San Ignacio Birthing Lagoon

Baja California, Mexico · February 1992 · As told by Eliza Herald, WUN Founder

While I was working on a film project to document emerging accounts of friendly interspecies behavior among the grey whales in the mating and birthing lagoon of Bahía San Ignacio in Baja California, I was graced with an intimate encounter with a mother whale that would forever change my understanding of Water, Life, and humanity's place within it.

Our crew had been out in the bay for many hours without seeing any whales. We were debating whether we should go in for the day. Our three small panga boats were positioned in a triangle, with their engines idling, while the organizers talked among themselves in Spanish. I was leaning over the inner gunwale of the boat, my hand heedlessly tracing the light reflections in the water.

Then suddenly, through the Water, I saw a huge, mottled shape rising between the three pangas. I knew immediately it was a mother whale. I was frozen, completely still, holding my breath in awe. She dropped down, realigning herself so she could avoid the spinning motors. Then, slowly, she rose again.

She rose until her enormous eye—about the size of a grapefruit—surfaced and nestled within the curve of my hand. She rested there, calmly, deliberately, making direct eye contact with me.

In that moment, I saw the universe in her eye as something indelible passed between us.

What I can only describe as signals of profound understanding passed from her directly into my heart—insights still revealing themselves, blueprints still unfurling, and navigational charts guiding my journey even now.

In a flash of insight, I came to see that the heartbeat of this mother whale was moving Water through her body as blood, with the same pulse I could feel pounding in my own chest. As she dropped away, after a few timeless moments, I was left with a philosophical and relational revelation of life's interconnectedness and a powerful message from the Whale that would be forever imprinted into my consciousness:

We have history, memory, and legend, and we remember the killing times.
We know we must forgive you, appealing to the Awakening Heart of Humanity
for ALL of our survival. For if we go, we ALL go. One Water, One Life.

02 · WHOLE-SYSTEM UNDERSTANDING

"If there is only One Water on Earth, there is only One Life on Earth."

Water is not a resource. Water is the Source of All Life.

I already knew that there is only one Water on Earth and that it is the same Water that has always been here. What emerged was the realization that if all Life is born from and nurtured by Water, then there is only One Life on Earth, expressed through its infinite creative diversity.

The whale had communicated something else to me—clearly, more clearly than anything I had ever received. The whales remember the violence of the killing times, and yet they are still choosing to forgive us.

This is why they are coming to us now and introducing their babies to us. They know they must appeal to the caring and compassionate heart of humanity for all of our survival.

The health of the cetaceans is inseparable from the health of our Water Catchments and the living systems that sustain us. The great lakes and rivers, along with the atmospheric rivers flowing through the sky, form an essential part of Earth's circulatory system. Across the world, these interconnected hydrologic cycles are under severe stress.

While Water continually participates in the dynamic balancing of Earth's living systems, our disruption of her natural cycles is leaving so many living beings suffering consequences they didn't create—impacts born of our collective failure to care for the living systems that sustain us.

The only way through this is to return to a culture of deep caring—together.
We must work together. Be together and become better together.

As we do this, we can draw down harmful behavior and draw up wisdom from our watersheds. We can remember what it feels like to stand with our feet in the water and reconnect with the Water inside our own bodies—our breath, our blood, our tears.

The covalent bonds within Water and the hydrogen bonds between its molecules are fundamental to the chemistry of all known Life. In this shared molecular foundation, I recognize the common bond that connects us all—integral unity expressed through infinite creative diversity.

This is the bridge between vision and action. Between inspiration and implementation. Between remembrance and effectively revitalizing what we've lost.

If we change our language, we can change our hearts, then our minds, and ultimately our behavior. By doing as little harm as possible and giving back to Life in equal or greater measure, we can help restore equilibrium to our vital biosphere.

This begins with the listening breath. As we breathe in, we receive vitality. As we breathe out, we release what no longer serves, offering our deepest truths and highest aspirations into the world.

03 · OUR IMMUNE RESPONSE

"Activating Humanity's Capacity to Care for Earth's Living Systems"

My unexpected encounter with this generous cetacean became THE defining moment in my life and the inspiration for what would eventually emerge as WaterUnity Networks (WUN)—an organizing framework based upon the Nature of Water itself and grounded in the truth that the wellbeing of Water, Earth, and All Life are integral and inseparable.

The realizations offered by the Whale are incredibly simple and fundamental, yet it has taken me more than three decades to translate this deeply somatic experience into a strategy that others can respond to through a viable action plan. And now, more people are beginning to recognize this calling and discover their own pathways to action.

Across the world, humanity's collective immune response is awakening—expressed through countless acts of care, reciprocity, and stewardship working to restore the health of Earth's living Water systems.

WUN is emerging as one of the connective frameworks through which this response can become coordinated, mutually reinforcing, and enduring: connecting individuals and communities with the knowledge and resources required to revitalize the living Water Catchments that sustain our lives and livelihoods.

Our responsibility is to stop the harmful interference that interrupts Water's natural rhythms and actively help restore the conditions in which she can continue doing what she has done forever—regenerating Life. By rebuilding soil health, restoring vegetation, and reconnecting waterways, we can revitalize Water's life-support systems so that natural regeneration can resume.

If we come back into alignment with this truth and live within it, Water becomes our greatest ally in rejuvenating Life. May we remember ourselves as Source Water, expressing as Life.
